Conta-se que Bezerra de Menezes, o denodado apóstolo do Espiritismo no Brasil, após alguns anos de desencarnação, achava-se em praia deserta, meditando tristemente quanto à maioria dos petitórios que lhe eram endereçados do mundo.
Em grande número de reuniões consagradas à prece, solicitavam-lhe providências de natureza material.
Numerosos admiradores e amigos rogavam-lhe empregos rendosos, negócios lucrativos, alojamentos, proteção a documentários diversos, propriedades e promoções.
Em verdade, sentia-se feliz, quando chamado a servir um doente ou quando trazido à consolação dos infortunados, porém, fora na Terra um médico espírita e um homem de bem, à distância de maiores experiências em atividades comerciais.
Por que motivo a convocação indébita de seu nome em processos inconfessáveis? Não era também ele um discípulo do Evangelho, interessado em ascender à maior comunhão com o Senhor? Não procurava aprender igualmente a lutar e renunciar?
Monologava, entre inquieto e abatido, quando viu junto dele o grande Antônio, desencarnado em Pádua, no ano de 1231.
O herói admirável da Igreja Católica, nimbado de intensa luz, ouvira-lhe o solilóquio amargo.
Abraçou-o, com bondade, e convidou-o a segui-lo.
A breves minutos, ei-los ambos no perfumado recinto de grande templo.
O santuário, dedicado ao popular taumaturgo, regurgitava de fiéis que se prosternavam, reverentes, diante da primorosa estátua que o representava, sustentando a imagem de Jesus Menino.
O santo impeliu Bezerra a escutar os requerimentos da assembleia e o seareiro espírita conseguiu anotar as mais estranhas e inoportunas requisições.
Suplicava-se a Antônio casa e comida, dinheiro fácil e saliência política, matrimônio e proteção. Não faltava quem lhe implorasse contra outrem perseguição e vingança, hostilidade e desprezo, inclusive crimes ocultos.
O amigo e benfeitor esboçou um gesto expressivo e falou, bem-humorado, ao evangelizador brasileiro:
– Observaste atentamente? As petições são quase sempre as mesmas nos variados campos da fé. Sequioso de burilamento íntimo, troquei na Igreja o hábito de cônego pelo burel dos frades… Ensinei a palavra do Mestre Divino, sufocando os espinhos de minhas próprias imperfeições. Fosse nas seduções da vida secular ou na austeridade do convento, caminhava mantendo pavorosas batalhas comigo mesmo, ansiando entesourar a virtude, em cujo encalço permaneço até hoje, entretanto, procuram-me através da oração, por meirinho comum ou por advogado casamenteiro…
E, por que Bezerra sorrisse, reconfortado, aduziu?
– Nosso problema, no entanto, é o de instruir sem desanimar. Jesus no monte sentiu extrema compaixão pela turba desvairada, alimentando-lhe o corpo e clareando-lhe a alma obscura…
Nesse justo momento, surge alguém à cata de Bezerra. Num círculo de oração, organizado na Terra, pediam-lhe indicações para que fosse descoberto um enorme tesouro de aventureiros antigos, desde muito enterrado.
Antônio afagou-lhe os ombros e disse benevolente:
– Vai, meu amigo, e não desdenhes auxiliar. Decerto, não te preocuparás com o ouro escondido, mas ensinarás aos nossos irmãos o trato precioso do solo para a riqueza do pão de todos e, descerrando-lhes o filão do progresso, plantarás entre eles o entendimento e a bondade do Excelso Amigo.
Bezerra despediu-se, contente, e tornou corajoso à luta, compreendendo, por fim, que não bastaria lamentar a atitude dos companheiros invigilantes, mas auxiliá-los com todo amor, consciente de que o Cristo é o Mestre da Humanidade e de que o Evangelho, acima de tudo, é obra de educação.

It is said that Bezerra de Menezes, the courageous apostle of Spiritism in Brazil, after some years of disincarnation, found himself on a deserted beach, sadly meditating on most of the petitions that were addressed to him from the world.In a large number of meetings devoted to prayer, he was asked to provide material provisions.
Numerous admirers and friends begged him for profitable jobs, lucrative businesses, housing, protection of various documentaries, properties and promotions.
In fact, he was happy when called to serve a sick person or when brought to the comfort of the unfortunate, however, he had been a spiritist doctor and a good man on Earth, far from greater experiences in commercial activities.
Why the improper summons of his name in unconfessable cases? Was he not also a disciple of the Gospel, interested in ascending to greater communion with the Lord? Did he not seek to learn equally to fight and to renounce?
He was monologue, between restless and dejected, when he saw next to him the great Anthony, disincarnated in Padua, in the year 1231.
The admirable hero of the Catholic Church, suffused with intense light, had heard her bitter soliloquy.
He embraced him, kindly, and invited him to follow him.
A few minutes later, they were both in the fragrant precincts of a great temple.
The sanctuary, dedicated to the popular thaumaturge, was filled with worshipers who reverently prostrated themselves in front of the exquisite statue that represented him, supporting the image of the Child Jesus.
The saint urged Bezerra to listen to the requests of the assembly and the spiritist seaman managed to write down the strangest and most inopportune requests.
Antônio was begged for room and board, easy money and political leadership, marriage and protection. There was no lack of people who implored him against others to pursue and vengeance, hostility and contempt, even hidden crimes.
The friend and benefactor made an expressive gesture and spoke, in good humor, to the Brazilian evangelizer:
– Did you observe carefully? The petitions are almost always the same in the various fields of faith. Eager for inner refinement, in the Church I exchanged the habit of a canon for the burel of the friars… I taught the word of the Divine Master, suffocating the thorns of my own imperfections. Whether in the seductions of secular life or in the austerity of the convent, I walked around maintaining dreadful battles with myself, yearning to treasure up the virtue, in whose pursuit I remain to this day, however, they seek me through prayer, through a common bailiff or a matchmaker...
And why did Bezerra smile, comforted, adduced?
– Our problem, however, is to instruct without being discouraged. Jesus on the mountain felt extreme compassion for the maddened mob, feeding their body and clarifying their dark soul...
At that exact moment, someone appears looking for Bezerra. In a prayer circle, organized on Earth, they asked him for directions to discover a huge treasure of ancient adventurers, long buried.
Antonio patted her shoulders and said benevolently:
- Go, my friend, and do not disdain to help. Of course, you will not worry about the hidden gold, but you will teach our brothers the precious treatment of the soil for the richness of everyone's bread and, opening to them the lode of progress, you will plant among them the understanding and kindness of the Exalted Friend.
Bezerra said goodbye, happy, and became courageous in the fight, understanding, finally, that it would not be enough to regret the attitude of his invigilant companions, but to help them with all love, aware that Christ is the Master of Humanity and that the Gospel, above all, is a work of education.
